Westports KL Dragons is a professional basket ball team, established by a joint effort of Malaysia’s very own young successful entrepreneurs who have a passion for sports – Mr. Ruban Emir Gnanalingam, Dato’ Wira Dani Daim, and Dato’ Robin Tan Yeong Ching. Westsports KL Dragons is the first team to represent Malaysia in the Air Asia ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) which runs from the month of October till February anually.
KL Dragons will be organizing an under-14 and under-17 league with the objective of nurturing youth in basketball, and developing them into professional players.
“We will be creating another avenue for kids to participate in a healthy life style and sports by giving them a target and show should they strive to rise to the top, they can eventually play the game they loves as professionals players,” says Dato’ Wira Daim.
In Malaysia, basketball is managed by the Malaysia Amateur Basketball Association (MABA), whose major sponsor is Petronas. The Malaysian national basketball team represents Malaysia at international basketball competitions. Its sole appearance at a world championship was in 1986.
To win a game, player cannot just sit and rely on skills without practicing it. “When you are not practicing, remember, someone somewhere is practicing, and when you meet him he will win,” says Ed Macauley.
Here, basketball is less popular among the non-Chinese citizens as there is not a lot of exposure to the sport in those communities. So, in order to attract the non-Chinese, there are special games organized by MABA and any other NGOs. Some of the leagues are:
· University College Basketball League (UCBL)
· National Community Basketball League (NCBL)
· Majlis Sukan-sukan Universiti Malaysia (MASUM)
· National Basketball League (NBL)
· ASEAN Basketball League (ABL)
Basketball was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian teacher, born in Almonte, Ontario in December 1891. He was asked by his physical educator to invent an indoor game that could be play during cold winter. At last he created a sport that would develop skill and one that was not exclusively relying on strength. The first game was played with two peach baskets for goals and a soccer ball.
We can’t just win a game with a talent but we need a team work in our team,. “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships,” says Michael Jordan, American NBA Basketball Player.
